Plain English

As well as reflecting our personality our writing style should always use plain English as it aids understanding.

Here are some tips to ensure that you use plain English across your communications.

  1. Never use two words when one will do

  2. Never use a long word when a short one will do

  3. Never use complex word when a simple one will do

  4. Keep sentences short (10-20 words)

  5. Write it like you’d say it (read it out loud – how does it sound?)

  6. Contractions are your friend

  7. Explain complex subjects in ways people can understand8. Revise and rewrite. Improvement is always possible
